Would it be difficult to add achievements (and achievement badges) to SMF? So that posters would have the badges they've earned in their ID sidebar. I've seen this at some fora, and though some take it too seriously I think it could be entertaining
Yeah, it sounds silly, but I like silly humour...
Especially meta-badges would be fun: "Badger: Has earned more than 10 badges"

Something like a "thank you" button?

Haha, yeah
F.i. in the Escapist forum people earn badges for having mode threads with more than 1000 or 10000 views, for having received messages from more than 10, 25 etc other users etc etc, and the five most valuable ones are displayed side-by-side in their sidebar.
This is an utterly silly idea, but it might be fun, especially if we keep on making new achievements

Depends on which achievements, I'm sure we can come up with a nice, interesting, non-spammy set

also possibly some in-game achevements would be hillarious to have, very much similar to the xbox360 series of achevements.
for example...
Ooops... : acidentally kill 5 of any creature on your own side yet -still- win a battle (online) (10pts)
hot streak: 3 victories in a row (online ) (10pts)
Mass Murder: completely destroy 5 or more opposing regiments in a single battle (online) (20pts)
White Wash: completely destroy all of your opponents regiments in a single battle (online) (50pts)
i could go on with the list there, maybe even have the achevements in another tab along with the player, a profile even, ticking off the verious achevements earned so as not to clutter there forum posts.

Seams to be the most suitable Awards-Mod
Problems with Achivements (except that they could cause spam depending on what awards we choose, so there will be not such things like "send 50 PMs around"):
Forum things are easy to validate but in game things are more difficult. Only ways would be: Do it while playing against an Admin or record a Video. For simple things screenshots should be enough but they are easier to fake then videos.
Let's collect some ideas for badges. I'm not sure if we will ever add them but...
Ingame:
- Win with an undead army that has neither a Vampire nor a Black Grail (An accepted ruleset must be used!)
- Play through the single player mode without loosing any regiments (loosing units is allowed of course)
- Win Flak's Goblin Campaign
- Rout a Black Grail
- Kill a Wraiths Regiment without using magic
- Hawk's eye: Kill a mage with a cannon ball or a bolt thrower during a multiplayer match
Forum:
- Take part in a tournament
- Be first place in a tournament
- make 100 posts
- Create a useful topic
Hamachi:
- Send a message to an admin
- Get kicked out of a channel because of clean up
..................
Don't take them all seriously of course, just some spontanious ideas

its easy to rout vampire. usually we cant see vampire fleeing cause he deads by this moment.
he is immune tofear but can retreat if attacked from the rear or due to the combat moral check.
hovewer i have no idea how to make grail fle.
