I Always recommend playing on on ePSXe a Playstation Emulation, with an xbox gamepad. Since the graphics are more 3d (like Dark Omen) rather than 2D on the PC version.

Playstation emulator

PC version no full screen

I'm trying to get the game to work on my computer but every guide i've followed so far haven't helped.

I've got Windows XP, I managed to get to the "play" screen and then an error message showed.

Thank you for the psx version!  ;D
I figured out that I played SotHR in the past, not DO. I got the 2 confused because SotHR looked so ugly in the pics I found with google. I completely forgot I played it on the playstation which has much better graphic.
So now I´m currently busy playing the psx version of SotHR. DO will have to wait, this way I get the complete story line.
I´m currently in mission 8. Just got the Black Avengers. Man I remember seeing those melt down and not being able to replace them  ;D They sure are a miserable bunch. Good times. I´m 22 now and I don´t remember if I played this when it got out or a little later but I was definitely too young for this game... still got pretty far, I think.

Btw, I have Win7 and it works fine.

But now i'm stuck at the mission called "Against the Grain". I kill all enemys, but the level just don't wants to be complete... do you guys have any idea?!

I can not get my mouse to work in SOTHR playing in "epsxe" is there anyone who can help?

Did u tried Alt+Tab?

Yep I have the same problem with PSX version:

Tried different versions of ePSXe and a few SoTHR disk images. Can't get mouse work ingame, only keyboard controls, despite the fact that I select mouse/digital control..Actually I tried all possible ones.

Could anyone help me out? A solution or a link to a 100% working emulator/image would suffice :)

P.S.
And another (minor) thing
I tried to play with keyboard only...managed to pass the first mission but of course it won't be playable once missions get harder.
Anyways, I am curious as how to zoom in/out using the keyboard in PSX version. I only figured out how to rotate the screen to change view angle.

There is no mouse support with emulators (that i currently know of) however, works fine with my xbox joypad, so plays like original PSX version.

:)

ps.

Keyboard controls = V to skip intro and Z to select options Esc twice to exit

w,S,A,D to move around or Arrow Keys and V to Pause (overhead map pauses game and is good to do all troop movements and attacks before resuming realtime)

I see,
well, I wish I had an xbox gamepad or anything :)

Actually, I only wanted to pass a few certain missions but not the whole campaign.

I need a PC or a PSX SotHR savegame pack that would allow me to open the missions I need to check for my Chaos Dwarf campaign.

Does any of the comunity members have such a pack? or probably you can email those currently inactive members who are likely to have sothr savegames?

This help would be definitely appreciated :)

Hey everyone,

Maybe that is the place where I can find some answers. Well, I played the PC version and there was not even single soldier of reinforcements through all Carsson's missions and the whole road to Zhufbar, making the game even more challenging. I suppose that is the main difference between PC and console version I've seen some walkthrough guide for the console, and it has mentioned about 8 or so reinforcements after Vanberg mission or something.

That is the reason I want to try console version, but I struggle with emulator. My question is: How on earth can I make mouse and keyboard controlls to work? I configured all the option and use  F6 + F5 combination, but to no result. I can't even skip the game intro and since the coursor is in default put on the load game option I can't do anything othere than watching intro movie again and again. Please help me.

Thanks

Hi, the mouse won't work with emulator and have u tried my keyboard controls in the post above?

Thanks for the answer

I've tried Your combination. Nothing works. Like the game just can't recognize the keyboard. Hmmm, maybe You can tell me of your controlls configuration? Which port and which option etc. And really, I can't imagine playing such fast and hard game without mouse. How can You switch fast between units during battle?

Title: Re: Shadow Of The Horned Rat

Remember I play using an Xbox game pad plugged into my PC running ePSXe 1.7.0
[attachment=1]

Keyboard controls

Arrow keys for movement like mouse
S+D+X+Z to scroll HUD buttons
E+T to scroll through the enemy
W+R to scroll through your troops
V to skip intro Start/Pause game
Z to select like Enter and hold down Z for Camera and use W and R to rotate and still holding Z press both W+R  together for zoom in or E+R together for zoom out
Esc twice to exit
C = Overhead map (use W+R and E+T to scroll through enemy and your own troops). Overhead map pauses game and is good to do all troop movements and attacks before resuming real time)

You could try a mouse + keyboard mapping tool and map the movement arrow keys to become the mouse directions and other buttons, perhaps.

By the way, is there a kind of army editor for SoTHR?
I remember I tried to edit stuff in a hex editor when I was a kid. But not everything I wanted to do worked well.
But as far as I can remember there was a tool to edit your army or at least instructions how to edit in hex editor somewhere...

Title: Re: Shadow Of The Horned Rat

Yeah the files used to be text, at least partially.
But the thing is to be able to edit all those flags: regiment is active, encountered, not encountered, unit_id etc.
I was about to drag my bro back to warhammer. He said he would play SoTHR but he does not want to play same army: Schepke infantry, Fletcher Xbows etc.
And I am not quite sure how to correctly give him dwarves from the beginning, add one of 2 latter wizards earlier etc and not break the game.

testing needed - experimental mouse support for PSX version

any PSX emulator can be used. Tested on Duckstation. First controller configured as Analog Controller (Dual Shock), second as Playstation Mouse (relative mouse mode).
I need feedback of how it works. Left button is [], Right button is X

Just finished playing and recording this beauty of a game.
I recorded the entire ordeal because I noticed there's not many lets play's of this game out there.
I saw 2 interesting ones, one stopped halfway and the other resorted to cheating so I decided to give it a go.
I set up a few rules for myself as to not reload the game no matter how many casualties. and to keep playing no matter how bad I did.

for those that are interested in the lets play ill put a link down below.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwkR9_bSmsu4fsP3lofAny1yFv50eWUc_ (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwkR9_bSmsu4fsP3lofAny1yFv50eWUc_)

After finishing it I wanted to start Dark Omen. Had a lot of difficulties getting Dark Omen to run, but thanks to the people on this forum I got it up and running. definitely gonna record this game aswell.

Thanks, guys, I am currently uploading a let's plat dark omen, almost finished which I got running through the help of this forum so I am definitely gonna leave a reference to this site in the hope more people will be able to play and enjoy it.

I'll be playing Mark of Chaos after which is an awesome game but it's not quite like SOTHR and DO.

P.S. SOTHR was kinda hard, especially not allowing myself to reload. it took me like 6 playthroughs to get the Ironman mode done :)

For those interested here's the link to my DO playthrough (as I'm writing this 13-3-2021) I'm still uploading the rest.

I Will most definitely do that, I'm currently recording Warhammer Mark of Chaos with Battle March add-on.|
Finished the Empire Campaign and as we speak doing the last mission for Chaos. ill then do the Greenskins campaign, which shouldn't last me more than 1 or 2 days.

After that ill make the video for the mod packs including the one u mentioned. I might also try some of the modded campaigns and make some more references to this great community. I am a starting youtuber so my range is limited for now, but ill gladly contribute where I can.

My project for after Warhammer: Mark of Chaos will be Return of Reckoning, the servers had been shut down but there's actually a pretty active private server for the game, but seeing as that is an MMO the lets play can drag on for ever so ill starting doing multi projects.

Link to there website for those interested: https://www.returnofreckoning.com/ (https://www.returnofreckoning.com/)

I am first and foremost a Sqaure Enix Fan (Dragon quest, Final Fantasy Etc)
But Warhammer has always held a special place in my heart ( at least the old era, the 40k not so much).

Many thanks and yeah Mark of Chaos and Battle March was initially disappointing, as we were all hoping for a Dark Omen sequel but its provided nice models and different type of game play. Return of Reckoning is good and have worked alongside some of their members to reuse all the Warhammer Online scenery for Dark Omen and the characters to produce 2d sprites ->

Hi Olly,

As promised I made a video reviewing a little about the dark omen 2 campaign some of its units and some of the other campaigns on the modpack u guys provided.

Here is a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY24j0jcvc0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY24j0jcvc0)

I'm a somewhat new YouTuber so this is my 1st time doing a video like this. feel free to comment on anything that could use some work. Tried my best :)

Shadow of the Horned Rat, Dark Omen, and Mark of Chaos Battlemarch (the last 1 still uploading as we speak) are done now. Im now recording Return of Reckoning and Regularly uploading these vids. And just started with Warhammer Quest Deluxe Ed. I wonder if i should have changed my  name to Warhammer fan :)

Fantastic! many thanks, great vid and much appreciated mentioning all the mod creators etc. The only minor points would be to restart the game each time you switch mods, as it fixes the new portraits to appear so you can get a 3d Skaven head instead of Morgan's etc and try the Dark Omen 2 mod save game to load mission 2 and see the new cutscene talking heads where the speech can be replaced in the future. Also check out the dgvoodoo2 control panel in the help fix guide, to improve the graphics even further.

Good narration and will enjoy watching all your other vids.

So i bring good news of sort
Since the GoG installer is BUSTED on modern PC's, and since no one wants to make a wing32.dll wrapper to opengl32.dll or d3d9 and such so the game works on modern machines without video issues per dxwnd feedback

i've found another easier way using DOSBox ECE (there is also 86box, Optionals or X, all 3 supports windows)
OldGames sk compiled a long time ago a windows 3.11 installation on dosbox that runs out of the box with S3 card, a pentium and 486 of chosing configuring dosbox, SB16  + support for Roland MPU MIDI drivers if installed and pretty much 500mb size HD.
Also Vogons suggested that the Windows 3.11 installation is better than Windows 95 due to obvious modern compatibility issues, i decided to test it, it turns out it works, it works pretty well with the 1995 Original CD release and this 3.11 compilation.

I think the GOG install has been fixed (for windows).

The GOG release also works in BoxedWine
https://github.com/danoon2/Boxedwine/discussions/34

The setup is not very user friendly at the moment...

Maybe I dreamed this but... at some point I may have patch in Fast InvSqrt() (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_inverse_square_root) into MS Reality Labs for a big performance boost.
Which may be helpful for running in an emulator.

===

The original v1.1 release runs in `Ubuntu 20.04 + Wine5.0` with custom patch to make it 32bpp...
I haven't tried the original installer, yet.
My backport of the `Color and Animated Cursors` from Dark Omen are working for the moment on Win8 and Ubuntu, maybe this is tied to the graphics card?

I've decided to check whether there are differences in missions between the PC and PSX versions of Shadow of The Horned Rat.
Turns out there are. Below are the screens from "Rescue Ilmarin" mission showing the significant change of Skaven army composition between the two versions of the game.
[attachment=1]
PC version:
3 x Clanrats
1 x Stormvermin
1 x Ratogre

PSX cersion:
1 x Clanrats
2 x Stormvermin
2 x Ratogre

This affects the balance of the mission as PSX version puts way more weight on Allor (Amber Wizard). The player needs to act quick and have enough points of Winds of Magic to cast and hit two Ratogres with at least one Amber Spear each (the spell which on PSX thankfuly has miles better pathfinding than in PC version). Fail to do so and the beasts will charge the still relatively unexperienced Grudgebringer Infantry and route them off the field.
Also worth noting is the fact that Clanrats are comparable in stats to Night Goblins, while Stormvermin are roughly equivalent of Big 'Uns, so the exchange of 2 Clanrat regiments for 1 Stormvermin and 1 Ratogre is quite a good deal for Skaven.

I wonder whether similar changes affecting the mission balance were applied to PSX port of Dark Omen. Maybe some day I'll have enough time to check it all, but it won't be soon  :P

Also note that the PSX version looks way nicer here than on the original hardware. RetroArch allowed me for numerous upgrades not possible on PSX, like: 4x higher rendering resolution, bilinear filtering, texture perspective correction etc.

PS1 SOTHR feels more like Dark Omen than the PC release, maybe is the engine they used for it.

i wish Mindscape had convinced GW and EA at that time to re-release the game on Dark Omen engine.

maybe one day the SRC for both will pop out somewhere like DNF 2001
