Title: We'll change
Post by: bembelimen on June 18, 2010, 04:04:25 PM
Our History (http://forum.dark-omen.org/news/well-change-t780.0.html;msg8260#msg8260) and latest Mods Dark Omen Multiplayer - Dark Elves vs. Skaven - Fotress Map (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm37_qUFq48&list=UU8sdepsCtmpBUP4U9nVE3Qg)

Hello,

If you read this (http://forum.dark-omen.org/news/downtime-the-next-few-days-t774.0.html) post, you know, that we planned to change something in the team structure. And now, after we discussed everything, the roadmap for the upcoming 5 days is finished.

You definitely noticed, that the site itself had no improvement since months, on the other hand we had several good mods and translations of the game.

The first step we do, is to move the whole page to Sweden and hope. So with this act, there will be a great and golden future for modding and extending Dark Omen. However I will not follow in this future. From Monday olly will be the new administrator of this page. I will quit completely and (perhaps) stay as normal user, we'll see. On Monday we'll start moving all files and the domain to the new server (possibly some downtimes) and then can the party start.

I think, this is the best way, cause I'm still pushed for time and so I'm not responsible anymore  ;D serious, without me, the site will be more open minded in this way, so it looks like a good choice.

I think olly will recruit some new mods and administrators, so stay tuned!

At least I wish olly good luck with the site and hope, that the whole community will have a good time.

Bye

Is this where I put a giant picture of a cat, and
'I CANZ BE MOD NOW PLS' ?

Looks like interesting times ahead. Kudos on stepping down to make way for the new order by the way, that must have taken some character.

Let's all hope we can fight the great GW corporate beast together, eh?

olly, your stats will be ws6 bs4 s6 t5 a3 i6 L10 , you will be the man that will have the power to create and destroy, to make your will true, solid and unstopable , we will be at our knee in your presence and sight to the floor, we will kiss your feet and your "all migthy hands".

i... i... i congrats you :S

PS: and ghabry what? will he be a moderator or something? will his present crown will be removed? i just wonder..

Big news indeed  :o .

I'm glad to participate in this virtual community, not only because it is a great place to have fun with one of the games i love, but also because it is a place where i feel comfortable, respected and not mind riot by freaking things (well, the ruleset discussions usually tend to move to that freak way but is ok and maybe in a point necessary); and all this "good" attributes of the enviroment i think that are mainly due to the administration of Benjamin and Gabriel, that where always aware of they role, and had never seen them took the way of the "owner control dictatorship" that it is so common to see in the forums. And the decision of take a step to the side when they don't agree with the "direction" that the majority wants to take, instead of insist in his sole position, it is the best proof of what i had said. So, i join the Alavet greetings and thank to them for all, and wish to see them around here, at least to play a bit from time to time.

I have always seen Olly like an enthusiastic and super positive member so it is glad to hear that it is him the new Admin, congrats and all the best for this new "age" Olly, and of course i'm here to help in what i can.

And about the main objective of all the move, i really hope that the legal vultures don't flew around here, but if they do i think that there is always a first warning before the "attack move" and then we can retreat to this format; surely we will miss all the progress that we could have done, but at least we will have a place to meet and play without being disturb.

May the blessings of the Great Sigmar be with us.

Our combined Eternal Thanks to Bembelimen!

Ive returned from Holiday and found he has successfully transferred everything. The journey continues and we've all certainly progressed Dark Omen further than ever before, so great thanks to you all.

My own journey began after being left so disappointed by Mark of Chaos in 2007, I found my old Dark Omen Cd and Mods and started to search the Internet for any signs of Life. Sadly there hadn't been for much action from many of the old Dark Omen websites for quite awhile but I did find Bembelimen and Ghabry's recent German Dark Omen website (http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de (http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de)). They had met by chance and found they shared a passion for Dark Omen, so I posted on their site,in very rough German (google Translator) that I also loved Dark Omen and had my original Mods to share, which we found were partial files from the original DOC111 Mod pack from the Legends- Mikademus and Smurf that had been lost for many years. Crucially I had a working Wh2Edit Dark Omen troop Stats Editor, made by Mikademus and the various alternate campaigns and Multiplayer files.

So after tracking down and contacting the Admins of every existing Dark Omen fansite:

Bembelimen and Ghabry's http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de (http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de)

Darkmancer's http://darkomenmulti.proboards50.com (http://darkomenmulti.proboards50.com)

Byru's http://darkomen.blitz-art.com (http://darkomen.blitz-art.com)

LazyDog http://members.tripod.com/~Sturmlord/index.html (http://members.tripod.com/~Sturmlord/index.html)

and all other sites and Fans

http://www.ovotech.com/Forums/threads.cgi?Ghabry=DarkOmen=General=Dark_omen_Fansite (http://www.ovotech.com/Forums/threads.cgi?Ghabry=DarkOmen=General=Dark_omen_Fansite)

http://undeaddude.tripod.com/kill.html (http://undeaddude.tripod.com/kill.html)

http://darkomenworld.freeforums.org (http://darkomenworld.freeforums.org)

I decided to unite them all together to Celebrate the Games pending 10th Anniversary. Since throughout my searches for signs of Dark Omen life on the Internet, I met an original Dark Omen Artist, Simon Tresdern (whoose brother also worked on Dark Omen and then went onto work on the Total War series-Shogun/Rome etc). He kindly put me in touch with all other original Mindscape/EA Dark Omen Producers/Developers, so I could send them all our thanks for 10 years Great Gameplay and politely request any Dark Omen resources and to Celebrate the 10th Anniversary with us fans.

Around the same time, I also discovered a never seen before Dark Omen Map viewer, made by Andrew Buchanan -an original Mindscape/EA Dark Omen programmer. It also contained his source code and could display the maps in High Resolution.

http://home.clara.net/obi/FrameBase.html (http://home.clara.net/obi/FrameBase.html)

So I knew my next mission was to track down Mikademus and Smurf, the original Dark Omen Modders and creators of the DOC111 mod, as they would be the most experienced Fans to make use of my newly discovered Dark Omen Map Viewer and Source Code- in view of enhancing it into a possible Map Editor. Also incase I received any tools or original resources from the Mindscape/EA Producers/Programmers. Mikademus was fairly easy to find as he is famous for inventing RTT (Real Time Tactics) to best describe Dark Omen type games that are different to the more commom RTS games. However, Smurf aka Andy Igoe was harder to find as after contacting Banshee Studios where he worked, I was told he had left many years ago with no forwarding address. However, after describing that I was intending to unite all fans and sites together, in celebration of the game's 10th Anniversary and my proposed letter of thanks to all the original Mindscape/EA Developers but more the fact that Mikademus had now rejoined us and was examining the Source code of the undiscovered Dark Omen Map Viewer, the person at Banshee Studios, Rebecca then admitted that she was indeed Smurf and had used the name Andy Igoe! May I also thank Rob who also joined us and is one of the few people around who can converse with Mikademus on very complex Modding issues and has produced many great tools for us all to use and along with Mikademus and Ghabry allows us to extend Dark Omen Further than Ever before! Most of all they have shown great patience and have taught me a great deal, I consider myself very fortunate to have been their Beta Tester on so many of their fantastic creations.

I then sent out thanks to all original Dark Omen Mindscape/EA Developers-

Hi there,

On behalf of all Global Dark Omen Fan sites,
we would like to thank you, for your part, in creating a truly amazing game.
Nearly 10 years on and we are still playing On-line Multiplayer Dark Omen.
May I also take this opportunity to politely request any Dark Omen resources, such as a Multiplayer Map Editor, to celebrate the game's 10th anniversary, early next year.
This would enable us to play into infinity.
Any help or advice would also be gratefully received but again we would really like to show our appreciation for years fun and innovative strategy.
Thank You
and
Merry Christmas!
:)

To my amazement I received various replies of thanks from them and most graciously from Jeff Gamon a Dark Omen Producer, who kindly took the time and replied -

Hi Oliver,
It’s good to hear from you – There seems to be a bit of a movement out there to get in touch with the old Dark Omen dev team. I understand that Richard Leinfellner and John McCormack have been approached via facebook. Once I heard this I got curious and went looking for Dark Omen on the web; it’s quite incredible the interest that’s out there even after ten years – we’re all very flattered.
Eerily, the old Mindscape gang got together last night and so these approaches gave us even more to reminisce about and discuss ways we may be able to help the community out.
As some of the forums correctly speculate, the game is the property of EA and so the release of tools etc may be a bit of a lofty goal. I will look into it though. Failing that, all we might be able to do is help out with the odd insight into how the engine worked so that the community might be able to advance its existing tools a little.
As for a campaign to sequel dark omen, who knows, maybe your best bet is to pressure GW; maybe suggest they offer the old Mindscape team riches, estates and peerages, etc. 8¬)
Leave it with me, I’ll at least check into the status of the source archives at EA and take it from there in the new year. Until then, have a Very Happy Christmas.

All the best,
Jeff Gamon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately Jeff was unable to get the Source code released as it turns out EA don't own it and not sure who owns Mindscape property but luckily, thanks to such a Fantastic Mod team we have achieved a great deal and after helping Bembelimen and Ghabry translate their old German Site http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de (http://darkomen.benjamintrenkle.de) into English, a new website and Home was created for all Global Dark Omen fans and Modders http://www.dark-omen.org (http://www.dark-omen.org) to combine all of our efforts and has made it a Great Time to Join our friendly community- Monthly Tournaments and New Mods.

Again Great thanks to especially-

Bembelimen, Ghabry, Mikademus and Rob - Developers
Flak - Super Moderator  (Campaign Creator and Tournament Organiser)
Darkmancer  - promoted to Administrator but also a Developer
Grend,Mormacili and Brapus/Itlerion - 2D Sprite Artists
Malus,Sipax,CidHalsey and Flak - Campaign Creators
Along with all of our members and fans that play but also contribute to new Rulesets and Balances, such as Jeronimo/Brapus,Wkurwiony,Alavet and many other veteran(WHF,Nitrox,DJ etc) and all new members.

So as the Dark Omen Global Spokesperson and now Administrator, my Future plans are currently to use my converted empty Tutorial Map to create semi new Flat Maps by strategically placing existing Dark Omen 3d Scenary objects but I have also Hired some professional 3d Artists to create new Trees, buildings, Fortress/Castles, WatchTowers for each race's landscape, until we are able to either create a Height Map Generator to produce Hills or a M3X file generator to allow the Camera to roam into new Terrain and create much larger flat Tutorial maps.

I have created a new Modification SubSection called 3D Scenery Models that will showcase and list possible new models for my Artists to produce. Intially i want to recreate Shadow of the Horned Rat first level to showcase and combine of all of mod tools togther. I am also in discussion with the Medieval 2 Total War Call of Warhammer Mod team and we may combine our mods, so that I donate them my 3d Scenary models for their 3d Character Models that maybe used to produce many new Sprites from and possibly add to the amazing Dark Omen Expanded existing Mod.

Our Journey continues in Great Style!

Three cheers for all of us!

Looking back on what the community has achived for nought but buttons and thanks in the last few years, I think it's truely incredible.

Now I'm all divorced and resettled, I'm back to my normal free timed self, so expect me to return to my frozen projects and start seeing what new goodies I can create.

(While writing my own novel, sadly not dark omen related.)

Let's see what we can do next, shall we?

Thanks to everyone. Without each one of us, we wouldn't be where we are today.

Bumping this thread (which is really unnecessary since it is stickied) to show it the love it deserves.

Bem has been doing a fantastic job on this site, and I have had many good and creative discussions with him that has helped develop it, so a big thanks to him, and I hope to see him return here when other phases of his life leaves space for it!

Olly, as usual you write impressive and interesting walls of text, and the timeline of contacts you chronicled above was fascinating reading! Many thanks for your patience as well!

As DjLeBombe stated, this is a great community with much love and tolerance, that requires very little maintenance and moderation. Add to that the love of this great game and we truly have a place to be proud to be a member of and belong to!

Also, thanks to everyone here for their patience and continual enthusiasm! The projects we do here are of the kind that takes much time and are exhaustive enough to require breaks now and then, but people are understanding and supportive. This is truly a good place to be!

Hello,

I am an old Fan of DO, recently reinstalled it (after quitting PC games for years) and just found your website.

All I wanted to say, to Olly and everyone else who contributed, is that I am so grateful that all of you are here and that you all love this game as I do. I nearly shed a tear when reading that you contacted the developers for the anniversary, I wish I could say them thanks too.

cheers and thank you.

****UPDATE****

There's been some massive advancements over the last year or so and we finally have the necessary mod tools to create complete remake projects.

Big thanks to developer Aqrit who fixed Dark Omen to run in full 3d mode on Windows7/8 with NVidia graphics cards

http://forum.dark-omen.org/help-section/3d-mode-and-win87-dark-omen-t1164.0.html (http://forum.dark-omen.org/help-section/3d-mode-and-win87-dark-omen-t1164.0.html)

and created a Height map tool so new terrain mod maps can now be made

http://forum.dark-omen.org/maps/heightmaps-t1222.0.html (http://forum.dark-omen.org/maps/heightmaps-t1222.0.html)

and fixed the overhead map (space bar) in single player to show new mod maps and camera extreme zoom out!

http://forum.dark-omen.org/3d-scenery-models/dark-omen-extreme-camera-zoom-out-t1172.0.html (http://forum.dark-omen.org/3d-scenery-models/dark-omen-extreme-camera-zoom-out-t1172.0.html)

and created a Shadow of the Horned Rat sprite/banner/portraits image extractor, to allow them to be reused in new Dark Omen campaigns

http://forum.dark-omen.org/2d-sprites/sothr-sprites-t1096.0.html (http://forum.dark-omen.org/2d-sprites/sothr-sprites-t1096.0.html)

and modded Dark Omen to allow mixed magic

http://forum.dark-omen.org/tools/mixed-magic-t1217.0.html;msg12453#msg12453 (http://forum.dark-omen.org/tools/mixed-magic-t1217.0.html;msg12453#msg12453)

and his compiler for WHTMG so we can create new talking/meeting cutscenes between battles

http://forum.dark-omen.org/campaigns/cutscene-modding-t1205.0.html;msg12348#msg12348 (http://forum.dark-omen.org/campaigns/cutscene-modding-t1205.0.html;msg12348#msg12348)

and of course his mod to add more sprites, banners without overwriting originals

http://forum.dark-omen.org/2d-sprites/adding-more-sprites-to-dark-omen-t1214.0.html (http://forum.dark-omen.org/2d-sprites/adding-more-sprites-to-dark-omen-t1214.0.html)

which combined nicely into Ghabry's fantastic Mod Selector which has made switching Mods and alternate campaigns so easy

If that wasn't enough developer Crash has been combining and creating many new tools into a new Dark Omen Battle Editor that one will revolutionize the way we mod and may even evolve into a whole new game engine remake!

and demonstrated much easier ways of producing new sprites from the Call of Warhammer 3d models that we have permission to reuse

So having moved jobs, got engaged, purchased a house I am now settled and have been using all the great new tools by combining them into a super uber mod. I will be writing new how to guides that will use my new mod as a starting point for others to reuse, as it has all the latest modifications and is easy for fans to extend by adding all the other Warhammer races onto new maps and campaigns. I have been using the excellent Dark Omen Expanded sprites and complimenting it with a new sprites using the Call of Warhammer 3d models and the Shadow of the Horned Rat ones. Currently it has Skaven and Dark Elves that I'm just finishing and will then throw in a some new 3d maps for us to battle on! The idea is for other fans to easily follow the new guides and help add all the other Warhammer races, to complete Dark Omen. With the Christmas holidays coming up I'm hoping for a final push to victory!

Again Big Thanks to you all and the especially our wonderful Modders!

:)

WOW those are MASSIVE advances!

Adding more sprites without overwritting originals, is "unlimited" ?¿? can be added like 8 sprites for each race in warhammer , and then organizing them in the army book (i guees they have to be added to human, orc or undead  army books) ?¿

However there is a banner limit right?

Anyway, waiting to have a new engine, mixed with all the tools already developed, to make 3d models with zbrush, paint them and pose them to make sprites without worring about anything, however i guess that if me or anyone make sprites, they could be imported to this "new engine" coming?

being able to mix magic is so great, that will work for the new races ♥

Olly you flatter me on that one  :-[
I do want to work on a new campaign but I lack time - rl does not let me to concentrate, -and so far I am kind of stuck. Let me explain why, even though I am not sure it's a right thread for this.

When I edit a particular battle mission, I not only check if every army pops in a right place and time and behaves correctly, but also test the balance: I want missions to be not too easy not too hard, interesting and doable. In order to achieve that, I tweak and shift enemy units force and quantity. Also, it is extremely important to know what regiments are under my control by that mission, what is their strength, approximate experience etc. I decide what spells I set, what artifacts I should give etc etc.
That said, I prefer a certain order in which campaign is being prepared.
1. I decide what my army will look like. That is decided: it will be a wood elf army.
2. I need a set of  12+ elven units, I need to arrange them in order: strongest units shuold not join first, I need to edit WHMTG and set which unit joins before  which mission etc.
3. I make sprites as I can (I am not extremely good at it but still I prepare several myself and also use help of other DO fans and take their sprites if suitable)
4. At this particular campaign I would use 3 brand new maps - even though they may be simple, but it is important to have new maps: it will be a level up.

5. I open B1_01 and make things there. Mission by mission I prepare enemies, add new enemy sprites, edit what can be edited, then test how it looks: bugs, crashes, and mission balance.

So I am stuck at 2-3: I made sprites for 3 units, also took a couple of other fans sprites but it is not sufficient. I need probably 1-2 interesting armies more. I made a few attempts to make more sprites but so far they come out ugly :) When I have my army prepared and at least 1 new map (1 new map is important to place sooner rather than later in campaign) I will proceed to preparing battle missions. I hope for Olly's and Illidan's help with these things :)

I'd be very excited to play a new mods/mini campaings for dark omen. On other side, I do understand quite big limitations of DO engine /editor and it seems logical to move into the other, perhaps, more friendly platform, like that other kickstater project.

Hello there !
'Been a (long) time I've checked what happened there (no rock throwing please  :-[ ). Looks like you made some good progress.
Now here's my question : I stopped trying playing DO because, in half of the multiplayer games/tournaments (using Hamachi) someone would crash, and that was kinda frustrating. Do you still have that problem ?

Yes alavet, Empyrean Rule is due to come out next year and will become the ideal place for us all to play at the same time multiplayer (Dark Omen Guild). So shall continue modding Dark Omen to bring new armies and maps/campaigns.

Seeing how we generate sprites from Call of Warhammer/The Sundering 3d models, we've made nearly a whole Dark Elves army and Skaven from SOTHR and there are some Wood Elves 3d models to reuse. Must do the new Fortress map this week.

Hi Kypper  - we use GameRanger now that replaced Hamachi, much more stable and so easy to connect with other.
