Edit by Olly *To play Shadow of The Horned Rat on Windows XP/Vista/7 please download this excellent AutoInstaller & ISO

http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/ (http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/)

However best played on PSX Emualtion as more 3d and graphically enhanced

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Hello all -- first post on this site -- I had to hit myself upside the head when I came across the site. I had no idea there was a fanbase like this in existence for Dark Omen!

Anyway -- I am desperate for help and am praying that someone on here can assist. I have both Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen for the PC. I recently purchased a new monster PC with Windows Vista (64-bit). As we all know, Shadow of the Horned Rat is not so easily installed nor run on this operating system. I am hopeful that someone can help me out here. I have a "notebook" code to install the game, but then it asks for the "WING32.dll" file. I get that, place in the system32 directory and it still says it cannot find the file -- placing it in the SOTHR directory makes Vista ask me to move it to system32. Anyway I want to play the PC version of this game again badly (it is the most "complete" version) and any help is most appreciated.

Failing that, I do have the emulation for ePSXe, and that is perfect -- EXCEPT the ISO has no background music, except for the cut-scenes. I think we can all agree that the score to this game helps to make it as fun as it is. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Lastly -- just want to make sure -- will the tips for installing and running Dark Omen on Vista work for 64-bit with no problems?

Thanks in advance to all who can assist! :)

My recommendation is to install a virtual machine. Trying to get SotHR to run under pure Win64 sounds like a Freddy Kreuger's nightmares.

OK, Mikademus, I am all ears -- how would I go about doing what you advised?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine)

Have you tried  MS Virtual PC? That's the virtualiser I used when trying SotHR again (before playing the PSX version on my PSP instead). Otherwise there's always WMWare, that's another common virtualiser.

Cool -- so, I would need the actual Windows 95 install CD to run on the VM correct?

I see you said you preferred the PS version of SotHR as well -- what are the major differences between PC and PS1 versions? Does the PC have more in it, or is the only real difference in the interface?

Patience, i bet there will be an answer soon :) Sometimes it needs more than 29h ;)

But I cannot help you, sry. I never used VM before.

Sorry, didn't mean to seem impatient...I'm not, just trying some dry humor :)

I am very curious as to the differences between the PC and PS1 versions though. Mainly, the ending to the PS1 version seemed very abrupt -- is the PC version's ending more complete?

Hi,

Well I think you are the first Member to suggest there was a difference in versions, as far as I can Remember,

but I  played Both Versions along time ago and have replayed the PSX Version more recently.

:)

So unfortunately I can't confirm and also I haven't had the time/requirement to post a perfect Guide

to pc installation but i guess soon i can, as I have all old website guides, that i collected over the years ,

so have (about 2 years a go on on Win XP) and can do it but its joining them all together in a Friendly Guide.

As you Know the PSX emulation is far far better graphics as it came out nearly a year and a half later,

and since the PC version played in a 1/4 of the windowed screen and map and Tool Bars etc

took up the rest of the screen.

Also 2d(Top Picture = PC ) vs 3d(Lower Picture =PSX) Arguement..

but yeah if it "was different" then it would Definetly be Worth it!

(http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3726/sot23333.jpg) (http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sot23333.jpg)

:)

(As I still have my 2 old Win98 Pcs with SOTHR installed (for me and Bro to link Old style games) I can Confirm Soon).

In reply to your question about vitualisers above: yes, you'd install an actual copy of Win95 on a virtual hard drive. This is in fact very painless and there should be plenty of WIn95 images floating around. You can of course use an image file as the install medium IIRC :)

There should also be plenty of tutorials on using VirtualPC and WMWare.

Title: Re: Shadow of the Horned Rat
Post by: OldSchool77 on March 20, 2009, 11:42:40 PM
Well, using a Windows 95 ISO would be risky IMHO so...Olly, I look forward to a future post on a problem free install for Vista.

Mikademus, your assistance is none the less appreciated :)

Title: Re: Shadow of the Horned Rat
Post by: Mikademus on March 21, 2009, 03:33:53 PM
No risk involved, you are installing to a virtual machine, which is only a file on your hard drive.

Title: Re: Shadow of the Horned Rat
Post by: OldSchool77 on March 21, 2009, 08:06:12 PM
Indeed, however downloading a Windows 95 installation ISO would be illegal and highly risky IMHO.

Perhaps, but I seriously doubt that the copyright of an unsupported legacy OS is enforced, and if you owned a computer with Win95 you technically own a licence already. However, it was only a suggestion about a viable solution, I'm not encouraging you to break infringe on copyrights. Anyway, SotHR is compatible with Windows98 (if you have a licence for that version of the OS and feel more comfortable with it) so you can always use it instead.

Oh, by no means did I want to imply that you would encourage that sort of thing. Anyway, most ISO downloads for Windows operating systems are via bit-torrent, which I won't ever go near.

I will stay tuned for the installation guide that was proposed a few posts back -- thanks again :)

Well, as fortune would have it -- my parents had a copy (that I had gotten for them) of Windows 98SE lying around. I installed on VM last night and have SotHR installed and running beautifully! I will start a separate thread detailing the differences between PC and PS that I have noticed to date.

Great news! :) Since I play on a PSP I personally think it is something of a choice between plague and typhoid. On PC the interface stinks, but you CAN do everything, on PSP the graphics rocks but a PSX has a more minimal input system and the PSP has even less controls than a PSX.

Title: Re: Shadow of the Horned Rat
Post by: OldSchool77 on March 25, 2009, 03:32:56 PM
Well, the interface is obviously one of the major differences between PS and PC -- but I wouldn't say it "stinks". Honestly, it feels much closer to the PC version of Dark Omen and, once you learn what click leads to what, it has a feel equal to the PS version in terms of smoothness. It is all up to personal preference in the end though, to which I am equally split.

More to come when I post the "differences" thread though -- I just noticed another one last night (wizards have "dispel magic" in PC version and casting a spell on an out of range target consumes magic anyway!).

Stay tuned...

OK I tried the game by myself and I got it to work on WinXP (funnily enough through an Linux guide (hint for Mika: XP+Wine should work))

Guide (http://ibboard.co.uk/Linux/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat-on-wine.html)

Quote
  • Copy RMORPH folder contents to your c:\windows\system32 folder.
  • Copy WARFB folder to C:\GAMES folder (or whatever folder you want, but then you'll need to change paths in reg file).
  • Create empty folder TEMP inside WARFB folder.
  • Create folder UPDATE inside WARFB folder.
  • Create folder BINARY inside WARFB\UPDATE folder.
  • Copy only files (not the folders!) from \WARFB\FILE\BINARY to C:\GAMES\WARFB\UPDATE\BINARY folder.
  • Update your registry:
    • Download the Registry file (http://ibboard.co.uk/Linux/SOTHR_Reg.zip)
    • Unzip the registry file
    • Open Wine's RegEdit
    • Select "Import Registry File..." from the Registry menu
    • Select the extracted file and click "okay"
  • Rightclick the exe and choose "Running in 256 colours"

You can save the file as registry.reg and double click it. It's important, that you adjust the path C:\\GAMES to the real installation folder.

Have fun.

Hi! i followed all the steps but i couldnt play, im not well versed in manipulating the PC, then maybe i lost something here

i got lost about the wine reg'sedit, since i really dont know about it, it opened on a site, and i still think i have to dl something (i think im beeing totally noob here).
Then the file i downloaded the reg one, i extracted on the folder of the game, ok, then i roll the autoplay from the cd, it appears the "play" option, but then it say's:

"This application has failed to start because WING32.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Could you please help me out?
Peace!

If you're using Windows, you don't need WINE. Click on the spoiler, there is the content of the file you need. Adjust the paths to you SotHR path and save it as "registry.reg". Then double click it and windows will "install" it by itself.

Thanks for your attention ADM, im feeling bad about this but the spoiler you said, i dont know what line ( or lines ) i have to change, i have the folder of the game in c:\GAMES\WARFB , could you help me out?

Title: Re: Shadow of the Horned Rat
Post by: 0meg4 on June 29, 2009, 09:29:42 PM
Ok, let me be more specific, because maybe theres something im missing, the folder is GAMES\WARFB

so here:

Copy RMORPH folder contents to your c:\windows\system32 folder.(what i did here is opened the RMORPH folder and copied all files in there, which is 2 files and a folder, then i pasted in the respective folder (system32)
Copy WARFB folder to C:\GAMES folder (or whatever folder you want, but then you'll need to change paths in reg file). (i did copy the hole folder and pasted on C:\GAMES\)
Create empty folder TEMP inside WARFB folder. (did it)
Create folder UPDATE inside WARFB folder. (did it, empty as well, there's nothing inside)
Create folder BINARY inside WARFB\UPDATE folder. (did it )
Copy only files (not the folders!) from \WARFB\FILE\BINARY to C:\GAMES\WARFB\UPDATE\BINARY folder. ( ok this is confusing because there ARE folders inside the Binary folder too, so i need to get inside those 3 folders and copy/paste the files as well as the files that are inside the BINARY folder??? what i did here was only get the files and leave those 3 folders and files inside alone)
Update your registry:
Download the Registry file ( i dl'ed it)
Unzip the registry file ( i unziped it and the file inside "sothr" does nothing... i unziped on desktop, inside GAMES folder and inside WARFB too and it didnt work)
Open Wine's RegEdit ( ok im supposed to leave this and stop here?? and only save the SPOILERS one and save the hole text on notepad then save the file on WARFB, click on it twice?, because if its that, theres something wrong, the messege i get when i double click the registry.reg file is " Adding information ... (blah blah blah) Are you sure you want to continue?" then i click yes "then instantly another window appear "The keys and values contained in C:\GAMES\WARFB\registry.reg have been successfully added to the registry." that's all and no installation processes or game running =( )
Select "Import Registry File..." from the Registry menu
Select the extracted file and click "okay"
Rightclick the exe and choose "Running in 256 colours"

I found a way to install & run Shadow of the Horned Rat in Windows 7 x64 (based on the Linux Wine install method already described in this thread).

1. Copy files from CD:
- Copy contents from CD:\RMORPH folder to your c:\windows\sysWOW64 folder.
- Copy contents from CD:\WING folder to your c:\windows\system32 folder.
- Copy CD:\WARFB folder to E:\ (or whatever folder you want, but then you'll need to change paths in reg file).
- Create empty folder E:\WARFB\TEMP
- Create empty folder E:\WARFB\UPDATE
- Create empty folder E:\WARFB\UPDATE\BINARY
- Copy only files (not the 3 folders) from CD:\WARFB\ENG\FILE\BINARY to E:\WARFB\UPDATE\BINARY
- Copy contents from E:\WARFB\ENG\GENERIC to E:\WARFB\ENG\WIN95

2. Import registry file (and adjust folder names if needed) - see earlier in this thread

3. Rightclick E:\WARFB\ENG\WIN95\WHSHR.EXE and choose "Win95 compatibility mode" and "Running in 256 colours"

4. Play SoTHR perfectly in Win7 x64!

This thread is so interesting. I have gone down the SOTHR install road on both paths(psx/pc)and psx was the best and easiest. There was something nostalgic about loading windows 98 and on VM(i did not use 95)and running the game but psx was def a better experience. If ur worried about downloading old windows OS buy an MSDN subscription and u can get just about every MS OS made including multiple keys. Hope this helps:)

Good to see you again Badazz and yeah PSX emulation is definetly a better looking version of SOTHR.

I saw you recently posted on my YouTube

Dark Omen ExtendedTerrain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_2UF9yXusU#normal)

For more info, please check out my plan to recreate Mission 1 of SOTHR but in Dark Omen and New Maps/Scenery

To play Shadow of the Horned Rat on Windows XP,here is a great Website I found that offers an Auto installer.

http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2435/ (http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2435/)

So follow their usual familar guide but crucially their installer (reg mod included) as it actually works!

->download (Warhammer.SotHR-www.oldgames.sk-Compilation.exe, 13235Kb)

http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/ (http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/)

(I also have the original Big Box SOTHR CD in my drive, rather than their ISO on offer)

Edit by Ghabry:
I installed the game. Based on the graphics I would say: Impossible to play. You can see next to nothing on this resolution. And according to the map it looks more like you are going shopping instead of fighting (sry I don't really understand this sentence in German ;))

I Always recommend playing on ePSXe a Playstation Emulation, that will run on your pc, as the Graphics are more 3d (like Dark Omen) rather than 2D on the PC version.

The PSX emulation is far far better graphics as it came out nearly a year and a half later and since the PC version played in a 1/4 of the windowed screen and map and Tool Bars etc took up the rest of the screen.

I installed both versions, and played until Shattered Pass (last Carlsson mission) on the PC. Used the oldgame.sk rip, and added the videos from another source. Worked like a charm on Win 7.

I forgot how much more effort they put in the story than in DO, the cutscenes are incredible.

However, the interface is a messy disaster, and I don't think I want to go through this anymore. Will try the PSX version when my 8$ gamepad arrives.

Why o why did they screw up Mark of Chaos   :'(

btw here the most epic video about Shadow of the horned rat:
FU SOTHR-MATURE LANGUAGE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4bo8J9gDfw#normal)

THAT IS AWESOME! :) just LMAO

Pity I lived 15 years after I played SOTHR as a kid, and never knew that it and Dark Omen are so popular in the world, and ppl talking about it! :)

Btw, SOTHR seemed harder to me, though I didn't know a word in English by then so all these spell descriptions, army descriptions, archers-shooters-melee-mage units etc passed me by. I only figured everything out by using units/clicking icons :)

Anyway SOTHR seemed a bit harder, at least certain missions.

Recently downloaded "small" version (without "cut scenes" or "speech" files) of SotHR from Abandonia.  Installed onto XP SP3 using their "whshr.bat" file + their  reg file.  Despite other folks saying that they couldn't get the game running, after using files obtained from Abandonia my SotHR loaded and played perfectly.  But of course it didn't have the cut scenes and speech to go with them.  However, the video scenes in the caravan and of characters giving briefings played ok, with the subtitles, but without any sound.
Although I used to have the game CD in the late '90s, I lost it.  So I bought another SotHR CD from EBay.  After a bit of trial and error found and copied the "animation" and "speech" files from the CD onto where I thought they ought to go in the game folder.  And again after a bit of trial and error, moving these "cut scene" files about eventually got the intro scene to play when loading the game.
Great, I thought.  Everything ok now.  But I was disappointed to discover that even though the intro scene played, with sound, none of the other cut scenes ever played.
I have tried registering on the Abandonia forums to seek help, but there seems to be no one there.
Since then I have tried several times creating a WARFB folder, and creating and copying the various folders and files as described in your posts, here, and using the appropriate reg file.  But to no avail.  When I try this method, can't even get the game to run.
Can anyone suggest how I can be apparently so close, but just can't get the cut scenes + speech to play.  Can this be achieved without using the "virtual drive" with WIN95 or WIN98 installed.  I have a WIN98 CD in my collection still.
If not, a bit more info about how to use a virtual drive, and install WIN98 on it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome, I would follow my edit post at the top of page 1.

Edit by Olly *To play Shadow of The Horned Rat on Windows XP/Vista/7 please download this excellent AutoInstaller & ISO

http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/ (http://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/download/2425/)

However best played on PSX Emualtion as more 3d and graphically enhanced

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

So since you now have the original cd from ebay, uninstall and delete all your existing SOTHR folders and use the above link for the AutoInstaller and have the cd in the drive when playing, so it can auto find all the cutscenes and sounds. Works great for me but prefer the Playstation version that came out later. Hope to see you progress onto the multiplayer Dark Omen battlefield soon. (This Saturday is our monthly Tournament, everyone welcome)

:)

Thanks for the prompt reply Olly.  I did as you outlined.
Followed your link and downloaded the Oldgames auto installer.
Removed all my other SotHR folders, and totally deleted the Mindscape key in the registry.
Then ran the Oldgames installer.  When it had installed, and it also had installed it's own registry values, I tried to launch the game, (with the CD in).  The game wouldn't even load.  Said it couldn't find loads of dll files, I think.
So I inspected the Oldgames\SotHR folder.  Found that the registry file only contained the "shared dll" lines.  No lines relating to the appropriate game folders at all.
And a couple of the Oldgame\SotHR folders were empty, when I'm sure they should have something in them.
So I inserted lines, (similar to other SotHR registry files that I've seen), and activated the edited registry file afresh.
Then tried loading the game.
The game loaded ok, but the intro scene didn't run, and as far as I can tell none of the other cut scenes either.  It appeared as if the game made no attempt to access the cd.

I'm sure I must have done something wrong, or missed a step somewhere, but can't figure out what or where.
Although not an expert, I am reasonably familiar with XP and it's workings, so equally I can say I'm not exactly a novice.

Is it likely to be anything to do with hardware, as my pc is pretty "top end", having built it last year especially to be able to play Total War - Shogun2 with all settings on High?

Thanks again for any more suggestions.

are u using the oldgames C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\OldGames.sk
Warhammer - Shadow of the Horned Rat.exe that autoinstaller creates, to launch the game and not using the CD.exe

:)

Certainly did.  Although I did try the CD exe. as well, just to see if anything different happened.

After many attempts at getting the video and voice clips working, under XP, finally admitted defeat, (although the game works perfectly).
Resorted to the virtual machine method.  Never tried it before so it was a bit scary.
Tried Oracle - Virtual Box, but Win98 wouldn't install properly on it.
Then downloaded MS Virtual PC 2007, that also had a download for an "image" (or something) of Win98.  Installed MS Virtual Machine no trouble, and after one or two minor hickups setting it up, ran Win98 with out a problem.  Can't even say that Win98 installed.  It just seemed to run!
Shadow of the Horned Rat, as you might expect, installed and ran perfectly on the Win98 virtual machine, video and voice clips an' all.  I even copied the "Speech" and "Animation" folders from the CD into the appropriate places in the game folder.  Then the game ran the video and voice clips without even accessing the CD.
Have even managed to get the Win98 to link with my LAN, so that I can easily swop files to and from my host XP pc.

But this isn't to say I'm not grateful for the help and suggestions offered by Olly and others.

When I get to the end of SotHR I'll see how I get on with Dark Omen!?

Cool, glad it all finally worked although I still would advise playing the Playstation version on emulation.

Hope to see you on the Dark Omen battlefield in the future.

For future reference,
when installing from the English v1.1 cd see here (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=7119&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=58)
( obviously for plain old x86 you would just use cmd.exe and not sysWOW64/cmd.exe )

Quote
the elven forest and... the game repeated the same mission over and over again

I've seen this as well, but it is passable.
IIRC you need to kill all the units quicker or
not let one of the enemy units flee off the board or
not having some unit of yours wiped out or
something like that.

I think the dwarfs need to survive for the cutscene ? It has been a long time since I've played :(

After installing SotHR onto the virtual Win98, and finding that it played perfectly, (as expected), I thought I'd try something else.
Copied the whole installed SotHR game folder from the virtual Win98 C: drive to my actual XP C: drive.  Then faithfully copied the Win98 registry entries for SotHR into my acual XP registry, (after removing the previous SotHR entries).  (I'd already inserted the various WING files into the XP Windows\System32 folder from earlier attempts).

Surprisingly found that the game plays perfectly on my actual XP now, including all the video bits and speech!

And by creating an empty "REMOTE" folder inside the SotHR game folder, and changing the registry entry relating to REMOTE from "D\\WARFB\\REMOTE" to "C\\Shadow of the Horned Rat\\REMOTE" the game plays without the disc having to be in the DVD drive.

The SotHR Win98 registry copied to the XP registry, but with the "REMOTE" entry changed to aim it at the game folder instead of the CD, resulting in the CD not being demanded by the game.
