Title: Help with 3D issues on IBM T41
Post by: modernhello48 on October 29, 2023, 11:35:27 PM
Hi guys

Can anyone help me I'm getting a flickery screen on my Windows 98 SE machine and a cutting effect in some of the scenery?

Video:

It's a Pentium M / 256MB ram / ATI Radeon 7500 AGP

Hi and welcome, nice retro setup. Try the troubleshooter on the cd and its various options, also refresh rates.

Hi ive tried everything on the troubleshooter other than the advanced options as i don't know what to tick or not tick there. The refresh rate is a possible issue though...

There are no actual Hz rates which is odd only those two options. Optimal gives me the flickering whereas the other option runs the game but as soon as you enter mission this shows up.

Eventually this hangs the system. Is there any other way to set refresh rates in Win98? As the ATI drivers seem to be doing weird stuff.

Unfortunately ATi compared to NVIDIA seemed to have more issues trying to play original Dark Omen on Win '98. In the old days we could use RivaTuner for NVIDIA but I bet it's hard to find Win98 additional software nowadays.

Our mod tools and fixes are for Win10/11 that improve the graphics, so definitely worth it if you have a modern computer.

I do, but this machine is smoother than the mod, its buttery smooth i love it but sadly this game sucks for compatibility

Agreed, I still have my win98 pc with NVIDIA Geforce for classic games.

For win 7 before our mod pack fixes, I can remember having to fix the flicker by setting monitor refresh rate to 100mhz on an old crt, to out flicker the flicker.

Have you tried using black and white cursor and not coloured, as we had an old mod to replace the b&w to coloured.

Hi yeah i have tried that but i get the Ddhelper crash like above.

I have made some progress I changed a vsync option and its a bit better now

Now i get this: https://streamable.com/c84xoa

Its definetly soome sort of refresh issue. I tried HZtool for windows 98 but its not changing my refresh rate.

Dege also created dgvoodoo1 a Glide wrapper for Win98

Can you also try using OpenGL instead of Direct3d in the Dark Omen Troubleshooter (if I remember it correctly as being an option) and ATi control panel.

dgvoodoo1 a Glide wrapper leads to a blue screen :(

These are the options for troubleshooter, no openGL option

Doubtful but worth ticking and testing each option. Did you install Direct x during the Dark Omen install. Also try other similar ages ATi drivers.

I will try but i think it's due to refresh rate i think...?

I found this collection on Vogons: https://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1669&menustate=6,1 (https://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1669&menustate=6,1)

Yeah ATi was always worse than NVIDIA, I had the same with Operation Flashpoint on a 256mb Radeon and had to swap to NVIDIA Geforce and never used them again.
You should be able to find a cheap Win98 setup with NVIDIA card.

I reckon it will require hooking up the laptop to an old CRT monitor that is capable of 100mhz refresh rate but no guarantee. Will continue thinking of other potential solutions.

I don't have anything like it to use and tbh i wanted it as an all in one unit hence buying a laptop.

It sucks because the frame rate is so smooth and its all moving like butter, its the smoothest i've seen dark omen run. But this flicker issue is killing me.

Could you try different refresh rates set on the ATi control panel and win98 display settings, although might be fixed at 60 Hertz but try 50 or 75 and maybe 100 if possible.

Can you change adapter to the integrated Intel graphics card perhaps on your screen shot or uninstall/disable the ati

Could also try something crazy like using our mod pack Engrel.exe and .dlls

It's an old thinkpad, there is no intel graphics just a dedicated ATI GPU

I'm thinking it's drivers just being crap with older games and sadly Dark Omen just will refuse to run on it. So annoying.

How did you get on testing each troubleshooting selection and applying the patch to your ATi, as maybe last hope. Such as ticking force 3d and then pressing ok and applying the patch to your card. Then unpatch and tick another selection like single scene etc. Also try ticking both the no 3dfx and mmx options.
