Title: Real-time Tactics games of interest
Post by: Mikademus on September 08, 2008, 10:20:57 PM
I've just came across a game called "XIII Century: Death or Glory", which seems like an interesting title. It seems to be a take on Total War, that it, a fully tactical real-time wargame with a realistic setting. Like Mark of Chaos it seems to emphasise close-up cameras over a more distanced view, which always is problematic for tactical control. However, the interface seems relatively well thought-through and somewhat inspired by Dark Omen:

The description sounds nice like:

Quote
Stats aren't much help when it comes to dealing with battlefields, though. Maps here are so intricately detailed that you have to use the terrain to your advantage in order to have a chance at victory

[...]

Each is packed with hills that provide great positions for archers, paths that allow cavalry units to pull off sneaky flanking maneuvers, rivers that let you set up almost impregnable defenses, and so forth

But the screenshots are cluttered and confusing, I hope they will change the camera.

Yeah, they are a bit confused, and they are still the best screen shots I could find. Most of the others were very close-up to the "action", which makes for nice images but very poor game play. Also, they seem to have designed their graphics for free camera and low tilt angles (since the skies are detailed and trees are modelled to be looked on from the side), which, again is a poor choice for tactical games.

How "tactical" is the game?

The screenshots look more like an uncontrolled fight between thousands of units ;) (how can you control so many regiments (in the third screen it looks like 18 regiments))

I agree, it does, and it made me think of Mark of Chaos. I was going to get the game, but then I noticed one thing: it is protected by Starforce. Forget me buying the friggin' thing. Made a post about it on their site (using the name Wellington):

Starforce is the most horrible copy protection ever.

And the persons who download the game illegal get a clean game without starforce -.-

What its your former opinion of this game Mikademus? i read the discussion you have with the moderators of the forum game and it seems like the malware thing can be resolved, its this correct? the game looks great and it would be great to play it, if my machine don't become a zombie after install it

When it comes to Real-Time in large scale then i prefer Cossacks Back to War
but as for regimental tactical combat i my mind nothing has an scratch on Dark Omen

Bomb, I actually still haven't played it to any significant extent, perhaps I should. Otherwise I have to agree with Flak, DO is still the best regimental tactical wargame. Shogun: Total War is perhaps equally good (the combat sequences of the game) but has another scope and focus, while DO almost perfectly captures the style and mood of the Warhammer TT game. And engrossing and cerebral as realism can be, just as satisfying but in a more hysterical and think-on-your-feet-tactical way can a Warhammer session be.

Otherwise I still think that "Sid Meier's Gettysburg!" is one of the absolute best RTT titles of all times, and that "Nexus: The Jupiter Incident" is well worth checking out for an alternative RTT set in space.

Hey guys,
I've actually played XIII Century, a few years ago I think. It's a lot like Dark Omen, but on a much larger scale, it definitely forces you to use units carefully, flanking and whatnot, and it plays pretty well. I sold it not that long ago because it lacks the longevity of most similar games.

If you're interested in regimental RTS games, you might like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_and_Merchants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_and_Merchants) or its expansion. It's a very addictive game that has buildings, like those in Age of Empires or Starcraft, but the use of units is far more important. You have the general types, archers, swordsmen and knights, and you have to use them like in Dark Omen as a unit to destroy your opponents village/base. It's got a decent, original storyline and the occational cutscene, that I still find brilliant, even 10 years on.

I played all the Close Combat serie (WW2 game). 'Was good.

The 3 is the best, playing russians ; and you will learn how to flank Tigers in Stalingrad with your poor, poor infantery to get a little tiny chance to damage these monsters :P

Post by: Flak on February 19, 2009, 12:03:43 PM
ah kypper i warms by heart to see Close combat is the ultimate tactical modern warfare game, i still play them 3 to 5 that is 1 and 2 wont work. Yeah the russian front is the best, altho from a realistic point of view i guess cc5 is the most realistic because the units have the hisortical units in their arsenal.

Ive made Operation Weserübung for cc3 hehe the attack on Denmark with the greatly fictional input that a fight was put up lol ;)

Indeed, the Close Combat series is a great set of games! For a faster rush I could recommend Sudden Strike I & 2 (at least I think they are called that, or where they those Helicopter games from the 80's?), but they are a little bit too close to the RTS template for me to really enjoy.

Title: Re: Real-time Tactics games of interest
Post by: Flak on February 20, 2009, 12:17:55 AM
Sudden Strike is good but it has a tendency to turn into a mad massed attack with no real tactics

Title: Re: Real-time Tactics games of interest
Post by: Mikademus on February 20, 2009, 01:12:32 PM
^ Yeah, that's why it is too close to the RTS model for me. Actually, that's also one of the huge failings of Warhammer: Mark of Chaos (which I would never recommend to anyone with an interest in tactical wargaming).

Title: Re: Real-time Tactics games of interest
Post by: Flak on February 20, 2009, 10:12:47 PM
ah ok i misunderstood you then yeah thats the problem with alot of games like that they are too like Red Alert, not that Red Alert wasnt good in its own way but its very primitive in ways of tactical capabilities

Pretorians is a good game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praetorians_(game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praetorians_(game))

It is quite similiar to many games like Total War but on a smaller scale. Very good!

Can't find my CD for this xD

Yes Praetorians is an excellent game, quite challenging campaign on hard (at least some missions), and the mod that add 3 new races is very good too!

There also is a new mod for Total War called "Call of Warhammer" created by the Russian comrades!
Most models were taken from Mark of Chaos since they are pretty nice, but other models guys created themselves.
So far it's only in Russian, but there are versions that are partly translated (only the important stuff is translated)

I played it and liked it, since it had some music from Dark Omen. The only thing that turned me off is that you need Russian version of the game to play it, and I have only English :(((

That sounds like a really serious problem! Can we with English versions play it at all?

You can, but some stuff (some unit descriptions) are in Russian. That was the only issue for me, rest was good. :D

I recommend Warhammer 40k Soulstorm. I developed my own strategy with Dark Eldar.

Do you also have dark crusade?? If yes, we could play together.

WHF I acccept your invitation, but I cant play in these moments (I have to reDL the game).

My brohter and I used to play a lot that game in a "now empty" Hamachi network.
Here i give some info about what races we picked considering version.

Jeronimo: Dark Crusade (Nekrons), Soulstorm (Dark Eldar)

My brother: Dark Crusade & Soulstorm (Imperial Guard or Tau)

PD: Good strategy games are also Stronghold Crusader  and Knights & Merchants: the peasant rebellion.

I don't have soulstorm atm on my pc as my HD is to small, but I do want to play some dark crusade. I'm able to play with every army except necrons and tau but I'm probably the best with imperial guard or orcs. My brother also plays this game a lot with his mates in college, he plays it more then me but I always kick his ass when we play against eachother.:D :P

I've always likes the close combat games, I wish they'd make a proper 3d one.

Nexus: the jupiter incident, i followed that game for ages as it went though development hell.  It's one of those games that i think could have been the best games ever but they fluffed it.  Unfortunately the game didn't sell very well, and the mod comunity never got going at all.  The stupid name didn't help it.

Yeah, Jupiter was a great little game, that could have been so much better still! I actually played through it (well, mostly) perhaps two months ago. Good times, and all the time spent on weighting different weapon and equipment alternatives reminded me of playing MechWarror II years and years ago!

And I doubt we'll see another true Close Combat game. I fear that the average gamer today simply isn't capable of that kind of gaming, being too dumbed down with time action events and linear "cinematics".

New RTT of the yank civil war out, Scourge of War: Gettysburg, anyone tried it? Visuals look a bit poor, about the same as Shogun: Total War, but it is a small indie production, so hey :)

This video is less "massive" than the previous.. it shows 2 vs 2 online game, you see how they chat each other and also spam weak units at first, then tech up, and players here have nice gameplay level.
I was trying to find a "between huamns video" without those background music... anyway, enjoy battle.

Three good remade/modded RTS games.

Praetorians (2003 Pyro Studios) - especially with Mod Complex (imperial mod 4.1, 5.0) still live community of players on GameRanger.

Z (1996, Bitmap Brothers) - especially ZOD Engine (2011) open source remake and it's branch ZED Online (2019 beta). There is still alive community of MP players around Nighsoft server.

Ultimate General Gettysburg (2014) - brand new game made in Unity. Includes morale of regiments, smart AI of opponent and also players units, low hardware requirements. There is also sequel Ultimate General: Civil War but the sequel is without multiplayer.

--------

I like also the Warcraft 1 and 2 open source remakes Wargus and War1gus.

I found game which brings at least some atmosphere from playing Warhammer. Really interesting indie game, which grown up into trillogy.

Kingdom: Classic
Kingdom: New Lands
Kingdom: Two Crowns

Kingdom: Classic is free-to play game on STEAM. Every STEAM user can download and play it. It includes all the important features of the game and let consider it one of higher difficulty levels of the later games. I liked it very much, so later I bought Kingdom: New Lands in GOG and Kingdom: Two Crowns in STEAM. I don't regred any of that and also children likes all three games a lot.
