Thanks Very Cool! We'll soon have a complete Dark Elf Army for multiplayer and alternate campaigns. I can't see a way to make flying sprites yet, since they all follow terrain height map gradients. However you did mention about the way  Goblin Fanatics move and may be modded some how. We can mod 3d magic models such as Mork's Foot so maybe we could have a magic spell to summon Dragons or Harpies aerial attack.

i found that age of empire 2 game community was not dead and have some very good sprite maker

i found that we can use the sprtie from age of wonder 2

the East and Weast poste is missing but we can transform pose with tools ( perspective , or shear)

A question - maybe not about Dark Elf sprites in particular.

Dark Omen sprites have a thin black outline. That outline makes small pics look better. I figured that outline may become missing in a couple of cases
- either I transfer some external pictures to DO sprites
- or I have to repaint black with a different type of color (modifying existing units), and black outline become ugly.

Illidan do you have a tool in mind that would restore black outline to a sprite? :)

Well, your sample does not need it. Just sometimes repaints make pictures somewhat indistinct. I remember a few years ago I had that problem. Thank you I will use borders in gimp if needed.

it seen some sprite are a bit lager cause it was a try for changing the all sprite size to 150% to get better sprite detail

Thanks mate... Olly is working on a new update for the Dark Omen 2 Mod so once that is released over the next few days I'll make some customisations to the Dark Elf army and include some new unit types, maybe see how I go using your sprite files.

If you could both work together on getting these to correct size and even make some more new Dark Elve sprites and thier shields and banners, then I can add it into the Dark Omen 2 mod template xslots etc and combine it into the latest release. We also need to get more SOTHR Skaven and I think Cuthalion has some of them in Wood Elves mod perhaps.

Attached 2 sprites.... couldn't send them in a message but here are the 2 remaining sprites for editing.

As I said, I suck at editing sprites these days.

  • Dark Elf Warriors (with spears and no shields)
  • Dark Elf Witch (to be used as a base for harpies)

I'd like to try add shields to the Dark Elf Spearmen and then copy that sprite and change the spears to swords so there are 2 units available, Dark Elf Warriors (with swords) and Dark Elf Warriors (with spears) and both having shields now.

The Dark Elf Witch sprite I've attached could be used as a base for model for the harpies. Just need to lighten up the skin tone, remove armour and add wings.

Let me know if this is something you can do.

These are the units I have already just to repeat for others:

  • Dark Elf Corsairs

I've used a combination of your new sprites + existing sprites from the Dark Omen 2 mod pack so it covers a few units but haven't completed everything yet so will probably do so in the next few days.

I'll add in your custom Banners as well so there are about 11 banners, 1 for each unit type.

I'll also create custom Book Profiles for all the units as above.

I think the spearmen sprite have already shield on some frame specially on walking one ( I also think it will also be difficult to add shield on all frame without redo all the pose model that mean redo all the model )

maybe we can try to use the age of wanders 2 sprites

Sounds a good plan unless they are 30 degree camera angle like Civ2/3, as Dark Omen requires 45 degrees (as we both found out when trying the Civ 3 Warhammer mod ones awhile ago).

We will have to create an updated guide for reusing the Total War mods of Warhammer characters for Dark Omen sprites, as they have Harpies.

Yeh the Dark Elf Warriors don't have shields... they have both hands on the spear.

I used to use the Outlaw Pistolier sprites as Shades however in all sprites I see, they are all riding horses but I swear a while back I found some sprites originally similar to the Outlaw Pistoliers without a horse (mounted).

I can't seem to find it now so unfortunately I'd have to edit all the sprites for Wood Elf Archers, changing the colours over to Black/Purple instead but yeh, I totally suck at editing graphics nowadays. More of a programmers mind hahaha!

Where do we get the sprites for Age of Wonders?

And the harpies look pretty good.

I'm about half way through editing the Wood Elf Archer sprites to look like Dark Elf Shades and it's coming along quite well so far... much better than I thought anyway!

Haha, well 8 or so frames have shields which is a bit weird.

Anyway, I tried editing the WoodElfArchers sprites to change the green colours to black/grey and the gold colours to purple but doesn't look very good. I haven't used MDose much so can't really get it to work to be honest.

Did you want to have a go with that?

  • Copy Wood Elf Archers sprites
  • Change Green colours to Dark Grey, Change Gold trim on cape to Purple
  • Compile new sprite

It's pretty easy I just haven't got enough experience yet so it will take me a while to figure all this out.

In the meantime, I'm going to work on getting those banners into the script so there's 11 banners in total and creating the Book Profiles as required.

Yeh I used the Corsairs already, they look good. The Sea Dragon Cloaks are amazing!

We could use them as a template however I don't think Shades have 2 weapons. I could use that I guess and just change the cape to black maybe.

Hey mate,

Did you want to try resizing the sprites you have so they match other unit sizes?

The hydra looks about right size but the 0x007ecorsaire.spr & 0x007edark lancer.spr are quite large.

I'm not the best using the MDose sprites editor etc... any help would be much appreciated. Seems I can't really do it without you hahaha

  • Loaded sprite file for Shades using Dark Elf Crossbowmen as template
  • Imported fairy on Sprite 1
  • Clicked Remap Sprite
  • Clicked Compile
  • Clicked Save Sprite

But I couldn't get it to work properly :(

Ahh ok... I'll give that a try maybe tomorrow.

Looks pretty damn good though now and the BANARC.spr files have a bow, close enough to a crossbow anyway and a sword in combat. Just need those 2 units resized. Corsairs might actually be alright, I'll have to check and confirm but the Dark Lancer ones are definitely too big.

I'll have a go trying to resize the units anyway, as I said I'm not very good with these sprite editors. I did graphics stuff back in 2001 for a few years but moved on to the programming world so it's not really my strength any more.

Now these guys look real good... I've still got the Black Guard sprite from DO2 Mod so I switched yours over to Har Ganeth Executioners and kept the original Black Guard as that but looks real good.

The corsairs are awesome as well but I forgot to get a screenshot.

I made the Dark Elves ballista sprite from the Mark Of Chaos model and is in the Dark Omen 2 mod sprite folder but still requires its destroyed frames, also notice how it fires twice as quick as a normal one as it's a repeator.

Yeh I've got everything adjusted as well as I could in terms of stats, bonuses, always pursue, fear and so on... just working out unit costs based on this:

Got the banners set, got the Book profiles done but didn't go all the way with the images but still looks pretty damn decent now.

I'll compile it all as a package once I've completed the remaining items:

No those sprites are fine already.

It all looks pretty good for now... I'm nearly finished testing out the custom enemies for the Single Player missions and then the kit is ready for release so you can test it out or add your own touch to it if you'd like to improve a few aspects.

So I've tested it using the new levels on Dark Omen 2 Mod however it crashes on the 3rd level.

Problem is.... I'm not sure which is the third level because DO2 Mod starts of at Battle 06_01 and then 06_02 haha....

Will send Olly a message and see if he can help me out with the level orders just so I can tweak whatever army is missing and crashing at that point.

So far looks really good though... would be easier if the troops weren't locked into deployment so they could be placed but I'll ask Olly that as well.

There is no mission 3 yet as B6_01 & B6_02 are the first mod maps that were used to prove new maps can be added, so mission 3 just begins the original game until we add all the other maps for campaigns to use.

Therefore you require an original whtmg.txt

which will just play the original game maps or equally if you don't even have a whtmg.txt file present.


All units are deployed to allow us to inspect their new sprites, banners, shields and 3d heads. Change PLYR_ALL.ARM with Wh32Edit to not auto deploy all the characters. Remember this is a mod map template which saves fans the hassle of having to add a lot of their own BTB deployment data, so it's prebuilt if they need to deploy any number up to the max and can instead control the amount via PLYR_ALL.ARM

C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen\Mods\Dark Omen 2\GAMEDATA\1PARM

ps. the Dark Omen 2 mod adds the following lines in to the original whtmg.txt to add B6_01 & B6_02 maps which is a modified copy of the original first 2 missions but with the map name changed

Ok so really weird... was trying to create a new campaign using other templates such as Undead/Skaven Mod and even Wood Elves however sprites worked, banners worked it's just once I changed xSlots.txt name all units in the deployment shield had Orc Arr'r Boyz flags instead and when clicked it crashed.

So the only change that triggered that was a name change of existing unit in xSlots.txt. Is there somewhere else referring to that exact name in coding etc? Just found that to be strange.

I'll upload all existing sprites tonight so the Dark Elf Army sprites, xSlots with descriptions etc, banners (definitely to be replaced if possible) and book profile images (didn't really make any changes here).

Will see how I go with the DO2 Mod and finding the error that crashed that because I had it all working quite well. I'll just need to go through trial and error, testing to debug what's crashing it at that point.

All other mods such as Cuthalion's excellent Wood Elves and Undead/Skaven campaigns were created before all mods tools were completed and added in the Dark Omen 2 standard template mod which also includes Multiplayer. Therefore they have different xslot entries names etc, so can not easily be updated hence the need for the Dark Omen 2 standard template mod for fans to use. Feel free to clone any mod as your starting point.

Makes sense now... don't think I have the knowledge yet on how to fully set up a new campaign so can only really try cloning your existing DO2 Mod I guess and see how that goes.

In the meantime, here are all the sprites for the following units:

Here's the banners I was using although some were mistakes I just couldn't be bothered to fix up properly  :-X but if those new banners from illidian work that would be pretty awesome!

And book files... I just re-used some book profile images here and for heroes set the secondary unit name as the hero name so it appears in the book profile. I wrote up a whole profile description for all troops which I've also attached in the xslots.txt example[attachment=2]

I'm up to 01_06 now.... so far so good.

Damn, defending Helmgart is a really hard mission with the Dark Elves. See how I go tomorrow when I can focus more on the actual gameplay and if I can get through that level or not.

It's taking some time to complete, however as I said I am getting there and it's quite fun so far!
