Title: Modding PSX Dark Omen?!
Post by: sipax on July 19, 2012, 08:14:30 PM
Hi there dark omen fans!
Some days ago i got my hands on a psx dark omen disk [ntsc version] and tried to modify enemy army files with wh32edit.
Well, it worked just fine (tested on my psp), but i cant find file which contains players armies (like plyr_all.arm in PC version). I searched whole disk for it - no results.

Any ideas where it can be or which file includes it (etc)?

Its cool to have Dark Omen handheld version, but when you completed original campaign for many times, you want some more.

I don't think you will find them to edit, as its all in a Playstation format but I will have to recheck when i found my Dark Omen PSX CD

Would be nice though!

:)

1)Its possible to change players troops, you can even play with them in 1st mission, but when you go to a troop roster - game will crash (It needs more tests, maybe i chagned wrong values).

2)Also, if I replace any original file of iso (even with its own copy) - game videos will be corrupted (if you will try to watch them game will crash, still there is about 1-2 secs to skip it). Music ingame wont be played either. *

*Why this occurs? Should i use different iso edit tool or what.

How i edited player armies:
1.) downloaded "extracted from hex code army file" from Gharby's post.
2.) made multiple copies of it.
3.) edited one of the copy with wh32edit, saved it.
4.) opened with hex editor original "extracted from hex code army file", so i can copy its values.
5.) opened original Hostorg.dat and searched for copied hexes.
6.) opened new army file in hex editor and copied new values.
7.) replaced old Hostorg.dat army hexes with new ones (with accuracy).
8.) saved new Hostorg.dat.
9.) opened original iso with Ultraiso.
10.) replaced original Hostorg.dat with edited Hostorg.dat.
11.) saved changes in iso.
12.) then i done some iso convertings and launched game.
result: see trouble n1.

Editing enemy armies is as easy like replace pc versions army files. But i didnt tried it much yet.
Only thing i know for 100% is that its safe to edit enemy troop sizes (ex: from 16 goblins to 26 goblins).

I will read most of "editing tools" topics in near time before asking any more questions.

Hm, maybe the PSX versions verifies the game files and crashes if some of them are altered?

But as you already say: I guess its a problem with Ultra ISO. But I dont know of any editor that is compatible with PSX isos
