READ ME: Ultimate Dark Omen XP/Vista/Win7/Win8.1/Win10 Game Fixes

Dark Omen runs fine on both Windows 32bit & 64bit Windows 10 & 11 if you follow this guide, so please don't post that it doesn't work for you because it will. So if you are having problems, then uninstall the game and delete the installed Dark Omen folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen and then search the Registry (RegEdit) for Dark Omen and delete any entries it finds. Then start again following the 5 simple steps in the guide below. DO NOT USE .ISO .BIN/.CUE DOWNLOADED CD IMAGES

1) You must run setup.exe (not autorun) from an English/UK Version of a Dark Omen CD and install English language to C:\Program Files (x86)\  and select Maximum Full installation & Direct X 5. (If Setup.exe doesn't run then check out the Fixes section further down this Guide).




2) Locate your Dark Omen folder, such as  C:\Program Files\Dark Omen or C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen and rename the PRG_ENG folder to PRG_ENGOrig


3) Copy the Movies folder from your Dark Omen Cd and paste into your newly installed Dark Omen folder.


4) Download this mod pack and copy paste/extract its 3 new folders (armytmp,Mods,PRG_ENG) to your Dark Omen folder. Remember to restart the game each time you select a different mod.

5) Start the game by double clicking on the new EngRel.exe inside the new PRG_ENG folder and go straight to Dark Omen's in game options and Turn on 3D and coloured cursors

To make Dark Omen look even better or if you have any graphics issues, then download Dege's dgvoodoo 2.63 software and paste the dgVoodoo control panel into the new C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen\PRG_ENG folder (it might have to be excluded from your antivirus). You can use the latest version of dgvoodoo 2 but requires using its latest D3DImm.dll & DDraw.dll files which are included in its download and need overwriting the ones in C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen\PRG_ENG folder.

Test the control panel is working by turning the dgvoodoo watermark icon on and off. If it can't turn off the watermark then right click on your Dark Omen folder -> Properties and give your Desktop User account Full permission. Use the following dgvoodoo settings ->

FIXES:

1) ONLY EVER USE A UK ENGLISH VERSION DARK OMEN CD. NEVER USE A DOWNLOADED .ISO .BIN/.CUE CD IMAGES
2) Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn off User Account Control (UAC) and reboot windows, before reinstalling, as UAC was blocking permissions.



3.) If Dark Omen looks like the picture below, then install the registry fixes included in the Mod Pack by double clicking on each one, starting with DO_VirtualStore 64bit.reg and check if the game is fixed. Also check your Antivirus isn't quarantining/preventing any of the files from running in the new PRG_ENG folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Dark Omen\PRG_ENG




Check your Registry Settings look like these -> Start -> Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Electronic Arts



or in the VirtualStore

4) If you find the Game won't install on Win 10/11 =  When running the Setup.exe you will have to do following:
a) Open your Task Manager
b) Goto Detailed View
c) Right Click the Setup.exe process
d) Click Analyze Wait chain
e) You will see a box with Setup.exe and some other processes below it, mark the processor below it and select "End Process"
f) Do this again and again, until there are no more processes that are in the queue before the Setup.exe and your Installation will begin. You might even have to uninstall that other process if it keeps preventing setup.exe to complete.

5) If you receive error message "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022)" then enable Direct Play by going to Control Panel ->  Programs and Features -> Add/Remove Windows Features -> Legacy Components and Tick  DirectPlay




If you receive "UninstallShield running" when trying to run Setup.exe as Administrator, then delete all instances of IsUninst.exe from the C:\Windows directory and try running your setup again.
