I had some problems with running Dark Omen on my Ubuntu Hardy so I'll share my experience, maybe it'll be usefull for someone.
Here is solution:
Grab a latest Virtual Box from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
Install it and install Win XP on it. Install Dark Omen + XP patch. You will notice that whean you trying to play it is very slow and Virtual box crashes. The problem is that Ubuntu does not switch automatically color depth.
Open a terminal and type:
sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop #it is stopping a Graphicl Display Manager and X session as well. On other distros it may be enough to kill X server
xinit -- -depth 16#It will run pure xserver in 16 bit, you also can safe some system resources if your virtual box runs slow
VirtualBox#run Virtual box, then run your virtual machine and enjoy Dark Omen
hope it'll be usefull for someone

One more thing,  was able to run it only on small screen but I have non standard screen resolution so maybe you won't experience this problem.

I didn't test it. Windows 98 doesn't work good on virtual box for me. Installation took about 2 hours so I skip it. Maybe other VM can handle win 98 better. As far as I know Dark Omen supports accelerators like 3dfx so probably It won't work with modern chipsets at all.
