Empyrean Rule - Looks promising, so I asked them how it compares to Dark Omen

Warhammer Dark Omen comparison

"Hi all,

this looks and reads like a really amazing game but may I be rude and ask how it compares to Warhammer Dark Omen please. (Apologies for the question and I realise your intentions are not to create a remake, so full respect intended but I run the Dark Omen fan site and would like to encourage my fellow players to come here)

1) Are formations solid? Sadly Mark of Chaos allowed troops to run through enemy ranks, compared to Dark Omen having solid ranks.
2) Can you counter magic, such as dispelling?
3) Line of Sight - I read there is field of view but do obstacles and terrain block vision ( I read you can hide in forests etc..)
4) Your combat sounds great compared to Total War games and I read it does use a Dice Roll system - if true could you point me towards more info please.

Regardless of the above, your game is very cool and personally I hope it will be a mix of Dark Omen crossed with Dawn of Fantasy!

Many thanks

They kindly replied with very positive answers ->

"Hi OllyOrc! Welcome to our Forums! Smiley

You are not rude at all....We may be developers, but we are gamers first and let me assure you that we have played tons of games. Wink

Dark Omen was one of them and it has been a great inspiration for us. Mark of Chaos...I personally followed its development, from the day it was announced..and I was very enthusiastic with it. I have to admit that I enjoyed playing with it BUT...it just wasn't the "Warhammer" experience we were all been waiting for. "sigh" Memories from the past... Smiley

To your questions!

1. It just doesn't make any sense to allow enemy units run through enemy ranks, UNLESS they are fleeing, in which case they receive some clobbering while trying to pass through. Wink In other words, NO we do not allow units passing through enemy units.

2. Some races have magic resistance, such as the Dwarves, which can work both in their favor and against them. For example..If an enemy Wizard casts an offensive spell against them, there is a possibility of half damage and in some cases even of 0 damage. However, when an allied Wizard tries to cast a buff on a Dwarven unit, a bless for example, there is a possibility of receiving half the bonuses and in some cases even none! There exists no dispell function, i.e. casting a dispell on a buffed unit, but....I like the idea, so we could implement that for casters.  ^^

3. Of course! In fact, it can be used tactically creating surprise attacks or even ambushes.

4. The Total War franchise is yet another great game we got inspiration from. Each unit type has specific stats i.e. Attack Skill, Defense Skill, Ranged Skill, Range, No. of Attacks, Endurance, HPs, Weapon Penetration, Armor, Morale, Damage, etc. It also has special abilities, which are unique for each unit and race.

To give you an idea:

i) Attack Skill Vs Defense Skill will determine whether an attack roll is successful or not
ii) Damage roll will determine damage
iii) Weapon Penetration Vs Armor will determine % of damage which will be soaked due to Armor
iv) Endurance determines how quickly a unit gets tired. Tired units lose effectiveness in combat and move slower, etc.
v) Morale determines the status of a unit when sustaining casualties. Low Morale will lead to fleeing..
etc. etc.

I hope that gave you some idea of how things work in combat.

Get ready for our next gameplay video, showing an underground battle between the Elirian with their allies and the Dwarves with theirs! "

As you know, I have been eagerly following the development of this great game Empyrean Rule - Rise Of The Ancients

http://empyreanrule.com/

Imagine "A sandbox game in an open fantasy persistent world with real time tactical battles, strategy, empire management. Endless possibilities. "  I personally think it would be like Dark Omen crossed with Eve Online and they've already got multiplayer demo movies, showcasing glorious battles. They've also offered a unique warbanner for us Dark Omen fans and I hope to start a Guild.

The creators are true gamers who also enjoyed playing the same mentioned games, so they really know their tactical engines and gameplay. I really hope we can support them and meet on the battlefield soon!
